How to Choose the Right Material for Outdoor Signage
N3 Display Graphics • 10 October 2025

When it comes to outdoor signage, it’s not just what your sign says that matters — it’s what it’s made from.

The right material can mean the difference between a sign that looks great for years and one that fades, cracks, or warps after a single winter.

At N3 Display Graphics, we help clients across Bristol and the UK choose signage materials that balance durability, quality, and brand impact. Here’s what to consider when selecting the perfect substrate for your next project.

1. Aluminium Composite (Dibond) — the all-rounder

Aluminium composite, often known by brand names like Dibond, is one of the most popular materials for external signs. It’s made of a polyethylene core sandwiched between two thin aluminium sheets.

Why it’s great:

  • Long-lasting and weather-resistant
  • Rigid but lightweight
  • Perfect for tray signs, fascia panels, and building branding

Best for: shopfronts, business parks, industrial units, and large-format signs that need to last.

2. Aluminium Tray Signs — professional and built to last

Tray signs are a premium choice for exterior branding. Made from folded aluminium composite panels, they have a sleek, modern appearance with hidden fixings that give a clean, seamless look.

Why they’re great:

  • Weather-resistant and corrosion-proof
  • Can be powder-coated to any colour
  • Suitable for vinyl graphics, built-up lettering, or illumination
  • Adds depth and professionalism to any shopfront or façade

Best for: retail fascia signage, corporate buildings, and brand rollouts that demand a smart, long-lasting finish.

3. Flat-Cut Aluminium Letters — durable and precise

Flat-cut letters are laser-cut or CNC-routed from solid aluminium sheets to create crisp, professional shapes that give instant visual impact without bulk.

Why they’re great:

  • Sleek, modern look that enhances brand presence
  • Can be powder-coated or painted to any colour
  • Works well mounted directly to walls or onto tray signs
  • Weather-resistant and long-lasting

Best for: business signage, wayfinding, or corporate identity that requires precision and style.

4. Built-Up Letters — bold 3D branding

Built-up (3D) letters literally bring your brand to life. They’re fabricated from aluminium, stainless steel, or acrylic, with hollow returns that give the letters real depth and volume.

Why they’re great:

  • Adds dimension and visibility, day or night
  • Works perfectly with halo or face illumination
  • Highly customisable in depth, finish, and colour
  • Durable and weatherproof for long-term outdoor use

Best for: retail fascia, corporate HQ signage, and brand identities that need to stand out — even from a distance.

5. Illumination — visibility day and night

An illuminated sign ensures your brand stands out even after dark. Whether subtle or bold, lighting can completely transform your signage’s impact.

Popular illumination types:

  • LED backlit tray signs – energy-efficient and evenly lit
  • Halo illumination – soft glow behind built-up letters for a premium feel
  • Face illumination – perfect for high-visibility locations
  • Trough lighting – a classic and practical option for fascia signage

Why it matters:
Illuminated signage improves visibility, enhances safety, and maximises brand exposure 24/7. Plus, modern LED systems are low-energy, reliable, and sustainable.

6. Think about your environment

The location of your signage affects material choice as much as the message does.

  • Coastal areas: Use corrosion-resistant materials like aluminium composite or stainless steel fixings.
  • High-traffic zones: Opt for impact-resistant substrates and anti-graffiti laminates.
  • Sun-exposed sites: Choose UV-stable inks and protective over-laminates to prevent fading

7. Professional installation matters

Even the best materials won’t perform well if poorly installed. Our experienced install team ensures every sign — whether at ground level or 9 metres up on a cherry picker — is fitted safely, securely, and built to last.

Choosing with confidence

The right material isn’t just a technical decision — it’s a reflection of your brand. Investing in durable, high-quality signage pays off with better visibility, lower maintenance costs, and a stronger first impression.

We’re excited to share our recent collaboration with Ovo Energy, where we transformed their Bristol headquarters with a sustainable brand refresh. This project blended bold design with eco-friendly materials to reflect Ovo’s commitment to the environment. Striking Exterior and Eco-Friendly Interiors The refresh begins at the entrance, where vibrant green vinyl gives the windows a fresh, bold look. The existing Ovo logo was re-coated in white, creating a welcoming focal point at the reception that reinforces their brand identity and environmental values. Inside, we incorporated printed plywood panels, locally sourced vinyl, and acrylics to create engaging, sustainable design elements throughout the office. Custom logos and lettering crafted from routed and painted plywood added a bespoke, high-quality finish.
